I reread the note three times and then leaned back into the pillow. I needed to get home. But no, not yet. I wanted to stay just a little longer. Miss Zora's cottage seemed so clean and safe. What had she told me? I had to remember. I pulled the bluebird cover up close to my chin, riffled through her voice, sifted through her sentences and pauses. But her words that had laid bare my destiny were lost, as if she'd revealed all the sorrows and joys of my days only to strew them across the earth. I looked out the window and stared at the sky. I imagined that I was flying, flying, flying. I felt my eyes turn dusky gray, then hawk yellow. High in the sky, the wind was pure and cold. My feathers, sun-soaked, glistened. I flew over open water, searching for pieces of my life. And like an osprey hunting mullet, I noticed each shadow that darkened the aqua sea.
